The Faculty has interests in several external facilities as a result of joint grant applications or negotiated access agreements.

Griffith University

These facilities were funded by joint ARC LIEF grants:

  • micro-Raman spectrometer equipped with laser excitation lines at 335 and 425 nm
  • Rigaku rotating anode single crystal X-ray diffractometer

University of Queensland

  • Brisbane Surface Analysis Facility

QUT is a partner with the University of Queensland in the Brisbane Surface Analysis Facility. This was established in 1982, as a major materials characterisation centre for industry, universities and R & D laboratories.

Research undertaken by the facility includes the surface analysis of polymers, metals and semiconductors; corrosion coatings and thin films; glass and ceramics; as well as failure, contamination and adhesion problems. The major techniques offered are:

  • X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS, or ESCA)
  • Secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS)
  • Scanning Auger microscopy (SAM)
  • Scanning probe microscopy (includes AFM, STM)

The latest acquisition was in 2002 with the installation of a $1.2M Kratos Ultra Imaging XPS System (funded in part through an ARC LIEF Grant) and located in the BSAF laboratory at the University of Queensland.
